I really wanted to like this book more。 It is a brief insight to mythology (obviously) and I enjoyed parts about ancient Rome and Greece, because I already know a lot about this topic, but the rest was just a blur。

I recently started reading The Mythology Book, from DK’ series Big Ideas Simply Explained, written by Shulamit Ambalu。 This book is a book that dives into short mythological stories form a variety of cultures and religions。 This book contained many varieties ranging from Egyptian to Greek。 Not only that, DK is also a very reputable source, so the myths are nearly identical to the originals。 This book is different from the others since it focuses on many different cultures, since these books usua I recently started reading The Mythology Book, from DK’ series Big Ideas Simply Explained, written by Shulamit Ambalu。 This book is a book that dives into short mythological stories form a variety of cultures and religions。 This book contained many varieties ranging from Egyptian to Greek。 Not only that, DK is also a very reputable source, so the myths are nearly identical to the originals。 This book is different from the others since it focuses on many different cultures, since these books usually focus on only one。 Another thing that I enjoyed about this book is that it contained short stories, so I would not need to read long to get a complete story。 Since many people find it hard to sit down in one spot and read for a long time; this book is excellent, since you can finish a story under 20 minutes。 Another thing that I enjoyed about this book is the origination, this book contains a very detailed Index in case you are looking for a specific myth。 It also further elaborates on certain topics in the directory in case you want to dive deeper into the history of the counties。 Finally, is that each story has a least one or more symbol or image to help the reader understand what the story is about。 But one thing that I felt that this book can improve in is having more stories from different cultures。 It does incorporate many different cultures, but cultures like Greek and Egyptian have more stories because they tend to be more popular。 All in all, I felt that this book is one of the best mythological books that you can get, the quality and variety is what sets this book truly apart from its competitors。 It allows you to gain knowledge in the concise wording and makes it interesting from the stories。 I would suggest this book to anyone that has an interest in myths, or anyone who wants to be introduced to myths since it contains a broad range of cultures。 I also suggest this book to whoever might be doing research about myths。 Even though it might not give provide a very deep and extravagant amount of knowledge of the myths, it is a great go to source since it provides an excellent introduction to the myth and is a reputable source。 I still enjoy reading some of the myths time to time from this book and propose it to people who like quick short stories。 。。。more

First of all, I love the series of these booksI had my favorite chapters since not all mythologies are the core of my interest。 I loved the Ancient Greece part, it did really good to have the knowledge refreshed。 The book is easily written。 I appreciated small mind-maps that were helping to follow the story and I loved little notes on extra subjects on each page。 It is not a book that will make you know all that is needed about each mythology but it is definitely a good thing to have on a shelf。

Fun comprehensive and diverse summaries of major mythologies in a nutshell 🐿 I already know a lot about Greek mythology so it was interesting to learn about the other mythologies and comparing the parallels between Roman mythology and Norse mythology and how all the creation myths are pretty much full of violence…The mythology that fascinated me the most were the Japanese creation myths - so many gods and goddesses… so confusing! Definitely want to learn more about them。

I enjoyed exploring mythologies across the world in the book。 My only complaint is that it barely skims the surface of each culture, leaving out some cultures entirely, and yet it is information overload。 It almost should’ve been a series, with each book set in a certain location (Europe, the americas, etc。)。 I also think maps would’ve been helpful with each myth, since photos abounded。

A good overlook of mythology around the world, but the chapters about Ozeanien, america and africa just seemed kinda unorganized because they tried to involve every subculture there is, I would have liked to have a better differentiation between the subcultures there。 But still all in all very interesting and informative and inspires to look into the mythology of the smaller, not as much known mythologies and cultures。

Good overview。 Simple and summarized stories。 The way this series presents the subjects for those, like me, that do not want to dive deep in certain subjects。

I've always loved mythology and I've rediscovered that love during the pandemic。 What I love about this book is that the focus is on all mythology。 Yes the traditional top three (Greek, Roman, Norse) are represented but this book also dives deep into Egyptian mythology and Irish mythology and African mythology and Native American mythology and an overall world mythology。 I've always loved mythology and I've rediscovered that love during the pandemic。 What I love about this book is that the focus is on all mythology。 Yes the traditional top three (Greek, Roman, Norse) are represented but this book also dives deep into Egyptian mythology and Irish mythology and African mythology and Native American mythology and an overall world mythology。 。。。more

I was playing Hades one day and I get to a point in the story where Zagreus discovers who his real mother is。 My wife happened to be sitting on the couch next to me and asked if I knew the story of Persephone。 I had no idea。 I didn't realize Zagreus was based on a real god from Greek mythology either, I had assumed he was created for the game。 So that got me thinking about Greek mythology and led me to pick up this book。 This is the third "Big Ideas" book I've read and I'm familiar with the beat I was playing Hades one day and I get to a point in the story where Zagreus discovers who his real mother is。 My wife happened to be sitting on the couch next to me and asked if I knew the story of Persephone。 I had no idea。 I didn't realize Zagreus was based on a real god from Greek mythology either, I had assumed he was created for the game。 So that got me thinking about Greek mythology and led me to pick up this book。 This is the third "Big Ideas" book I've read and I'm familiar with the beats they go through at this point。 They're really coffee table books that you can pick up, read a section, and pick it back up later。 This one includes 80 myths and legends from around the world and throughout history, each section split up geographically with Greek and Roman mythologies being the beefiest - likely because there is so much writing left from both and there is a continuous thread in Europe where writers have read The Iliad and Odyssey in translation and these stories have stayed in conscious memory。 I was surprised at how little we have on Norse myth - most everything we know about it comes from two sources written much later in time。 Even less still is documented on any culture that has no surviving documents or had an exclusively oral tradition。I think, like my experience with the other two "Big Ideas" books I've read, this is a great jumping off point to explore a certain mythology or culture more。 I'm definitely more interested in Maya and Aztec myth then when I started this book。 But the book overall could do a better job at putting everything into some more perspective。 All over the world, all throughout history, you will see the same threads: a great flood, death and rebirth, trickster gods, the concepts of good and evil, original sins, an "Underworld"。 I would love to have read more about connecting these common threads throughout history and how they still inform modern religions。 One other thing I think is helpful when reading something like this is the differences between theology, mythology, and ritual。 There's a relationship between these in any belief system that's worth thinking about going into something like this。 In the end, I think this still merits 4 stars because the stories themselves are so interesting and there are some great high resolution paintings and artifacts (at least in the ebook) included too。 。。。more

this book's flaw was that it covered too many topics。 with such a vast title as "mythology," there's going to be lots of content to cover。 unfortunately, not many tales were mentioned enough to even matter。 the ones that i knew (literally 90% of them), i knew in more depth than was covered。 this book had some cool aspects, but it just was too vague for my tastes。 this book's flaw was that it covered too many topics。 with such a vast title as "mythology," there's going to be lots of content to cover。 unfortunately, not many tales were mentioned enough to even matter。 the ones that i knew (literally 90% of them), i knew in more depth than was covered。 this book had some cool aspects, but it just was too vague for my tastes。 。。。more

Enjoyable review of some of the most popular myths of the ancient world。 Impressed at how succinct and condensed they made such a huge topic。 Definitely a book I will go back to from time to time to read again。

I liked that this book was structured by region and had timelines for context。 There were some grammar errors and the writing isn’t spectacular, but it’s a cozy and interesting read。 I also liked how they highlighted the mythology of some lesser known regions。 The illustrations could be better as well as the index, but I love a good info graphic!

Bilingual review。 I read the Spanish translation, which leaves a lot to be desired。 While I did enjoy the book, I would recommend reading it in the original English (The Mythology Book)。I love mythology and legends, so I found this book fascinating, despite the numerous errors and odd constructions/vocabulary choices in the Spanish version。 I particularly liked the references to existing published works, so the reader can find more in-depth treatment of the myths from certain cultures。 Also very Bilingual review。 I read the Spanish translation, which leaves a lot to be desired。 While I did enjoy the book, I would recommend reading it in the original English (The Mythology Book)。I love mythology and legends, so I found this book fascinating, despite the numerous errors and odd constructions/vocabulary choices in the Spanish version。 I particularly liked the references to existing published works, so the reader can find more in-depth treatment of the myths from certain cultures。 Also very helpful were the short sketches in the Index, which gave a quick overview of myths that were not selected for full-length treatment in the body of the book。 I may or may not re-read the book, but I will almost certainly look up some of the other anthologies that were mentioned。Me encantan la mitología y las layendas, así que este libro me fascinó, a pesar de los abundantes errores y las extrañas construcciones gramaticales y vocabulario en la versión castellana。 Me gustaron particularmente las referencias a otras obras publicadas para que el lector pueda encontrar un trato más profundizado de los mitos de ciertas culturas。 También fueron muy útiles los bosquejos cortitos en el Índice, que dieron un resumen de los mitos que no fueron seleccionados para un trato completo en el libro。 Tal vez vuelva a leer el libro y tal vez no, pero es casi seguro que investigaré unas de las colecciones mencionadas。 。。。more
